How I Flew to Thailand for (Almost) Free and How You Can Too

By Travel Hacker Teddy

Most people think flights to places like Thailand cost $1,500–$2,000

I paid a few dollars in taxes.

And no — I didn’t win a giveaway.

I didn’t have airline status.

I didn’t have a rich uncle.

I used points.

This is the exact strategy I teach inside First Class for Less, and it’s the same one that took me from the U.S. to Thailand for what most people spend on an Uber to the airport.

If you’ve ever thought, “Travel hacking sounds cool but way too confusing,” this post is for you.

Step 1: I Didn’t Start With Flights — I Started With Credit Cards

Here’s the part nobody tells you:

Airlines don’t give you points for flying anymore. They give you points for spending.

And the fastest way to earn tens of thousands of points is through welcome bonuses on travel credit cards.

I opened a card with a bonus worth 75,000+ points.

That alone can be worth:

  • A round-trip flight to Europe

  • A one-way flight to Asia

  • Multiple domestic flights

  • Luxury hotel stays

Not from spending more money — from redirecting the spending I already had (rent, groceries, subscriptions, bills).

Step 2: I Didn’t Book Through Google Flights

This is where most people mess up.

They search: “Flights to Thailand” and see $1,800.

I searched: “Award availability to Thailand.”

Very different world.

Instead of looking at cash prices, I looked at which airlines had seats available for points through airline alliances like Star Alliance, OneWorld, and SkyTeam.

These alliances let you book flights on partner airlines using your points — often for a fraction of the cash price.

Step 3: I Used Airline Partners Most People Don’t Know Exist

I didn’t book my Thailand flight through the airline I flew.

I booked it through a partner airline program that required way fewer points for the same seat.

Same plane.

Same seat.

Same champagne.

This is the part that feels like a cheat code once you learn it.

Step 4: I Paid $60 in Taxes for a $1,700 Flight

That’s it.

Points covered the rest.

And here’s the wild part: I still have points left for my next trip.

This is why travel hacking isn’t about one free flight — it’s about learning a system that works forever.

“Okay, but is this only for people with perfect credit?”

No.

I’m a credit analyst by career — and I built this system for normal people with normal finances.

You do not need:

  • A perfect credit score

  • High income

  • Airline status

  • To fly a lot

You need a plan.

The Truth: This Isn’t Complicated — It’s Just Not Explained Well

Most blogs make this sound like rocket science.

It’s not.

It’s a step-by-step system:

  • Open the right card at the right time

  • Hit the bonus using your normal expenses

  • Transfer points to the right partner

  • Book award seats instead of cash flights

That’s it.

But nobody lays it out in order — which is exactly why I created First Class for Less.

Why I Built a Course About This

Because my friends kept asking:

“How are you in Turkey?”

“How are you in Thailand?”

“How are you flying business class?”

“How are you affording this?”

And the answer was never “I’m rich.”

It was, “I learned how points actually work.”

So I turned the exact system I use into a step-by-step course anyone can follow.

No jargon.

No gatekeeping.

No “travel hacking bros” energy.

Just the real strategy.

You Don’t Need More Money to Travel More

You need better strategy.

The airlines and banks have already built the system.

I’m just showing you how to use it.

If I can fly to Thailand for almost free, so can you.

And once you learn it once — you never pay full price for flights again.

Because travel shouldn’t be for “someday.”

It should be for this year.
